Quake 3 Arena holds a legendary reputation in the shooter genre. There are now signs that the game might be returning, with hints of a remaster.
Quake 3 Arena established new benchmarks in the shooter genre back in 1999. This first-person shooter developed by the Texas studio id Software was among the earliest titles to concentrate solely on competitive multiplayer, influencing the fast-paced gameplay we see today. At the time, its graphics were also recognized as a landmark achievement and served as a long-standing benchmark.
Despite spending a full 24 years under review by the German Federal Review Board for Media Harmful to Minors due to its extreme violence, Quake 3 garnered a dedicated fanbase in Germany nonetheless, albeit through indirect channels.
Currently, there are growing indications that this iconic shooter may soon be making a comeback. The American studio Nightdive has suggested that it is developing a remaster of Quake 3. To give younger audiences a taste of what the game entails, we’ve unearthed a gameplay video with commentary from our archives:
What transpired?
During a livestream from Nightdive Studios, the developers shared an intriguing comment stating: “All eyes, I mean Orbbs, will be on this announcement!” The term Orbbs refers to the bots in Quake 3’s offline mode, which players could utilize for multiplayer training.
This comment could thus be interpreted as a hint that the studio is crafting a new version of the shooter, suggesting an imminent announcement. A screenshot of this comment was swiftly shared on Quake Reddit, prompting fans to speculate about the potential features of the rumored remaster.
The remaster aligns well
While no official word has been issued yet, a remaster of the cult-classic shooter would definitely fit the narrative: The rights to Quake 3 are currently owned by publisher Bethesda, which purchased Quake’s creator, id Software, back in 2009.
Nightdive Studios has previously released remastered versions of Quake 2, Doom, and Doom 2 for Bethesda. The studio has also established itself as an adept remasterer: the 2023 release of System Shock is another product of Nightdive.
Following the immense success of the Oblivion Remaster launched this past spring, it seems evident that Bethesda is currently focused on reinvigorating its major franchises through remastered versions crafted by external studios. Although Nightdive has primarily worked on single-player titles in the past, it remains to be seen if the studio can successfully modernize a legendary multiplayer shooter.
