"Why Can't We Simply Have a Battlefield?" – Fresh Battlefield 6 Speculations Annoy Fans

A report suggests that the upcoming Battlefield will feature a battle royale mode, and EA is optimistic about it.

As we mentioned a few days ago, the publisher Electronic Arts is setting extremely high goals for Battlefield 6. An insider source indicated that they anticipate a total of 100 million players. The source noted that Battlefield 2042 reached 22 million players, while Battlefield 1, the most popular installment, saw between 30 to 40 million.

Optimistic BF6

According to the report from Ars Technica, these ambitious targets are intended to be achieved with a new Battle Royale. The inspiration is likely derived from the success of Warzone, which, based on official reports, surpassed the 100 million player threshold.

In May 2025, a significant leak provided details about this. The new Battle Royale mode is expected to be a Free2Play spin-off of the new Battlefield, incorporating a variety of elements from Firestorm, the Battle Royale for BF 5, while also drawing considerable influence from Warzone.

Fans express frustration

“Why can’t we just have a Battlefield?” This is among the top comments on the subject on Reddit. One user, Sidecarlover, believes they have the explanation:

Shareholders recognize that Warzone is incredibly profitable, and they want a comparable version. However, rather than improving upon it, they are likely to create a subpar version and be puzzled by its lack of success.

Indeed, many are currently pleased with the information from the Battlefield Labs community testing program leaks. User dev1ance0N3 commented: “BF6 appears intriguing based on the leaks, but given EA’s track record, they’ll likely find a way to spoil it…”

Other users such as Sabetha1183 contend that EA is too late to enter this genre and is merely pursuing trends instead of capitalizing on its own strengths.

Apologies EA, but you’re nearly a decade late to transform Battlefield into a Battle Royale. However, if you act swiftly, you might only be five years late in creating an extraction shooter. Or perhaps you could simply… develop a Battlefield game.

By the way, Battlefield 2042 already included an extraction mode called Hazard Zone.

The insider report further discloses that very few within the studios involved have faith in the projected figures. Nonetheless, it’s important to note that these are leaks rather than verified information. The previously leaked details regarding multiplayer and the campaign were generally well received by fans, but there are now concerns that EA may be losing focus.
