Iconic Western Shooter Franchise Makes a Comeback After 12-Year Break

The Call of Juarez franchise, recognized for its Italian Western-style shooting games, could be making a comeback after a 12-year break. The previous title, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, launched in 2013. In 2018, developer Techland reacquired distribution rights from Ubisoft, yet the franchise has remained quiet since. As reported by Insider Gaming, a new entry is being developed by Techland, although specifics are limited. Significantly, the game is expected to utilize the Unreal Engine rather than Techland’s proprietary Chrome Engine, which powered their Dying Light and Dead Island franchises.

Techland recently scrapped two unspecified projects, one of which was an action role-playing game set in an open-world fantasy environment announced in 2022. Another initiative, working under the title Cornerstone, drew inspiration from the Star Wars universe and featured elements like the use of the Force. Insider Gaming indicates that poor management choices, including the transition to the Unreal Engine, contributed to the cancellation of the project.

It is still unclear whether the engine transition will influence the new Call of Juarez title. Techland has not verified any of this information. The studio’s upcoming release is Dying Light: The Beast, a standalone offshoot of the horror series, scheduled to debut on August 22, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X & S.
