Screenshots of a job listing have once more emerged. This time, they indicate that Rockstar’s expansive open-world title is arriving with its own application. In this fervent atmosphere, the anticipation for GTA 6 feels doubly prolonged. To ease the tension slightly, some enthusiasts are donning their Sherlock Holmes hats and scouring the web for hints. Every morsel of information regarding Rockstar’s forthcoming blockbuster sends the community into a frenzy.
Currently making the rounds is a job listing from Rockstar North, seeking a “Mobile Engineer.”
The return of the companion app?
On Reddit, user u/Gerald19901 reveals a find from another individual. As per this source, Rockstar North is actively seeking a “Mobile Engineer” – this can currently be seen on rockstargames.com, or you can even apply yourself if you happen to be in Edinburgh.
The job listing outlines specifically:
Rockstar is in search of a skilled Mobile Engineer with robust iOS and/or Android development expertise to assist in building and maintaining our mobile platform, which includes our SDK and build systems.
While GTA 6 is not explicitly referenced, a connection appears plausible. Rockstar North is reportedly taking a prominent role in the development of the open-world title. With less than a year remaining until the launch, there might not be ample time for additional projects, leading the community to believe that a mobile engineer will be recruited to create a companion app.
Companion applications previously existed for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. They provided real-time access to interactive maps, among other features, and allowed users to customize car license plates. However, the iFruit app for GTA 5 was phased out in 2022.
Though these applications have not always sparked waves of excitement in the past (RDR: Companion holds a 2.8-star rating on Google Play), the community maintains a relatively optimistic outlook regarding GTA 6. In the aforementioned Reddit thread, fans are brainstorming how a companion app could introduce revolutionary elements.
One user suggests that it would be intriguing to use the app to hail a cab within the game. Others concur and propose extending the functionality to allow full control of the in-game mobile phone via their own devices.
