When Old Myths Reappear
The hints have been accumulating for months, but now the enigma surrounding a potential remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag has gained new traction. A casual comment from Edward Kenway’s English voice actor is now generating excitement. Matt Ryan spoke engagingly about the pirate game during a fan event – and inadvertently revealed more than Ubisoft would probably prefer.
In a brief clip on the TikTok channel therebelarchive, the actor is asked at the signing if it’s necessary to have played Black Flag indeed. His response comes swiftly: You might want to “perhaps revisit it.” This alone could be brushed off as a nostalgic joke – if not for the smug grin and his subsequent half-sentence where he mentioned he was actually “not supposed to say more,” but that there was a rationale behind his suggestion.
The fans have finally caught the scent of possibility. Although Ubisoft continues to evade any formal confirmation, the speculation surrounding a new version is unrelenting – not least because the publisher is already engaged in remaking other entries in the franchise.
Particularly intriguing: The initial rumors regarding a Black Flag remake, which could be developed internally under the codename “Obsidian,” were already circulating in 2023. Ubisoft’s ongoing silence does not necessarily imply inactivity – quite the opposite.
Assassin’s Creed, Remake, Black Flag – How Likely is the Comeback?
Matt Ryan’s comment is far from random. In recent years, Ubisoft has revisited its roots with Mirage, drawing the series back to classic stealth and assassination tactics in 2023. A remake of the most beloved pirate escapade would be the next logical progression – also from a financial perspective.
Assassin’s Creed 4 is not only a fan favorite but was also a major commercial triumph. The original moved over 15 million copies globally. With its open world, naval combat, and charismatic lead, it remains one of the most diverse titles in the series even today.
A remake would therefore not only lure back nostalgic gamers, but it could also thrive on contemporary platforms – featuring improved controls, fresh quests, and visual enhancements. The technology is available, as is the demand. No official endorsement has been provided yet, but the indicators are more than optimistic: if a voice actor is already raising the flag, the course towards a remake should have been firmly established.
