Ubisoft Contemplated a "Covert" Assassin's Creed Character Creator Enabling Selection of Ancestor from "Countless" Options

Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed Unity” was originally conceived with an innovative character creation feature that would have enabled players to pick an ancestor from an extensive pool of millions, granting a personalized journey through the French Revolution. This idea was designed to give each player a unique outlook, differing from the established storyline of Arno Dorian, the main character of the game. Former creative director Alexandre Amancio disclosed that this concept surfaced during the development stage when the team explored two alternate versions of the game, one emphasizing cooperative play more heavily. The character creator was meant to boost player involvement by customizing the historical experience to personal decisions, showcasing the varied encounters of the period. Nevertheless, this ambitious functionality was ultimately not carried out, leaving players to experience the intricacies of revolutionary France through the perspective of the Scarlet Pimpernel-esque nobleman, Arno.
