Dawn of War 4 Omits Space Marine Captain in Part 1 Because of Imbalanced Abilities.

Gabriel Angelos chooses to avoid the conflict in the latest Dawn of War – which is fortunate for the Orks, as few are eager to confront the hammer-wielding super soldier.

Dawn of War 4 is primarily designed to draw inspiration from the original installment of the strategy series. However, in one significant way, the new iteration diverges from its esteemed predecessor. This time, we will (seemingly) not be taking to war alongside Space Marine Captain Gabriel Angelos once more.

Particularly as the captain has ascended to the role of Master of the Order – yet this did not prevent the relentless super soldier from engaging in battle in Dawn of War 3. In Dawn of War 3, we witnessed Gabriel Angelos unleash his might with the fearsome warhammer Godsplitter in his possession.

For the new team at King Art, this immense power likely posed a challenge, they reveal in an interview with IGN.

“We don’t want Gabriel Angelos in the game.”

Heroes were already a pivotal aspect of the initial Dawn of War, but with significant distinctions compared to the subsequent two versions. Starting from Dawn of War 2, heroes became the central elements of the entire gameplay, with standard units merely serving as cannon fodder. This is where the demon-slaying super marine Gabriel Angelos fits in seamlessly, naturally.

Dawn of War 4 seeks to revert the power dynamics to match that of the first game, implying that while heroes remain formidable, they are no longer instruments of mass destruction. Heroes will be ordinary units that swiftly fall when left unchecked. Gabriel Angelos does not align with this concept:

That was indeed one of the choices we made quite early on. We don’t want Gabriel Angelos in the game. To us, he appeared a bit too formidable. It’s also odd; either we incorporate this somewhat overpowered character from the outset, which would be a bit out of place, or we say, “Oh, well, he’s lost his memory and all his abilities,” which is also a peculiar cliché. So we decided on more “regular” heroes. Cyrus and Jonah return, but in terms of their abilities, they are closer to the level of standard units.

Of course, Cyrus and Jonah are no slouches either and can easily handle a small band of orks, Necrons, or worse:

  • Cyrus can accomplish this: Cyrus is the finest scout of the Blood Ravens, excelling in covert reconnaissance. He frequently remains undetected and strikes from ambush using a sniper rifle.
  • What Jonah can achieve: Jonah is a Librarian and thus possesses psionic abilities. This means he can essentially cast spells and utilize them to unleash lightning bolts or hinder entire groups of foes.

The fourth entry in the strategy series is currently under development in Bremen by King Art. Previously, the development was consistently managed by the Canadian studio Relic. There is no release date for Dawn of War 4 as of yet, considering the game was only recently revealed at gamescom.

Numerous details regarding the storyline are still unclear. We would therefore not dismiss the chance of encountering Gabriel Angelos again, at least within the narrative context.
