Michael Knight and K.I.T.T. are returning for another thrilling journey. The masterminds behind the Netflix hit Cobra Kai are making it happen.
We bet the theme song is already echoing in your mind! In Knight Rider, even the opening tune is legendary. Now, the 43-year-old crime drama starring David Hasselhoff is poised for a new revival, thanks to the creators of Cobra Kai.
Knight Rider is transitioning into a film
Michael Knight and K.I.T.T. are not making a comeback in a new TV series, but plans are underway for a film. Universal Pictures has brought on the trio who successfully revitalized The Karate Kid: Cobra Kai boasts six seasons, strong ratings, and enthusiastic reviews from both critics and fans.
Currently, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are collaborating on a script for a Knight Rider film, with Hurwitz and Schlossberg possibly taking on the directorial roles as well.
Several questions remain unaddressed: Information regarding the cast and who will take over from David Hasselhoff is yet to be revealed. It also remains uncertain when the film will hit theaters. Thus far, we only know it will be a contemporary reinterpretation while keeping the essence of the original. This approach worked quite effectively for Cobra Kai.
The enduring legacy of Michael Knight and K.I.T.T.
Knight Rider premiered in 1982 and aired for four seasons until 1986. David Hasselhoff certainly gained significant momentum in his career from the show, where he stars as the solitary hero Michael Knight. With the assistance of his intelligent vehicle K.I.T.T., he tackles criminal mysteries and defends the vulnerable.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first revival of Knight Rider. Following the original series, the TV movie Knight Rider 2000 was released in 1991, which spawned several sequels. In 2007, a reboot series was attempted but was discontinued after just 17 episodes due to a continuous drop in viewership. Additionally, there are various novels, audio dramas, video games, and even a board game inspired by Knight Rider.
Hasselhoff himself has sought to return to Knight Rider for many years. Emulating the style of Logan, he envisioned a darker reinterpretation with an intense R rating, but that idea never materialized. In 2020, Spyglass Studios aimed to reboot the beloved series, but that initiative also fell through.
In 2021, James Gunn (Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy) even voiced interest in a potential revival of Knight Rider. However, shortly after, he accepted the role of co-head at DC, thus managing an entire cinematic universe, leaving him no time for this project.
Currently, retro and nostalgia are trendy in Hollywood. For instance, both Highlander and The Running Man are undergoing remakes. More details can be found through the links above.
Additionally, in season 2 of Fallout (premiering on December 17, 2025), Macaulay Culkin, a childhood star, will make an appearance. Fans speculate they already know what character the leading actor will portray in Amazon’s video game adaptation.
