Experience Authentic Equine Breeding in Ostwind: The Tale of Khiimori's Open World.

During our FYNG presentation at gamescom, the creators of Ostwind: The Legend of Khiimori unveiled fresh insights regarding their forthcoming horse-themed game. A significant focus was placed on realism, particularly in the realm of horse breeding.

Horse-themed games appear to be thriving at present. At least, that’s the impression given by the remarkable player statistics shared in mid-last month by the Japanese horse racing simulator Umamusume: Pretty Derby on Steam, with gameplay snippets taking over social media for weeks.

The Munich-based development studio Aesir Interactive intends to take advantage of this trend later this year with the adventure title Ostwind: The Legend of Khiimori in November. In this latest release, players assume the role of a young courier rider in 13th-century Mongolia, navigating the expansive steppe alongside their animals and engaging in horse breeding.

The breeding aspect is especially poised to be a key feature in the new Ostwind, as horses were essentially the lifeblood of Mongolian society during this era. During our prominent FYNG stage event at gamescom, the developers shared additional details on how horse breeding functions in Khiimori.

Aesir’s PR head Adriano Nicolosi stated that the development team prioritized realism in the design of the breeding system. For instance, players can crossbreed horses across generations with the aim of achieving a desired appearance (coat color) or emphasize certain traits.

To obtain horses with the utmost agility, you must crossbreed animals that possess high agility over several generations and train them focusing on this characteristic. Only through this process will the best genes surface in the end. Breeding works similarly for traits like strength or cold resistance.

In the Early Access phase, players cannot yet assign their own names to their horses, but this feature will be available in the game’s final release.

The game is being crafted using Unreal Engine 5. The expansive game world will present various types of landscapes, reflecting the vastness of real Mongolia. From verdant steppes to icy mountain ranges and the relentless Gobi Desert, players will encounter all of these in the game. The developers assert that they have even integrated actual scenic landmarks from Mongolia into the game.

However, you will need to wait a few more weeks before embarking on your adventure; The Legend of Khiimori is set to enter Early Access on November 4, 2025. A console version will be released following the PC launch.
