I had the chance to experience Black State for twenty minutes and grasped its essence: a whole lot of fun.
Game visuals are an interesting topic. While it’s certainly impressive to engage with aesthetically pleasing titles, that aspect offers little value if the gameplay isn’t enjoyable.
I sampled the game at gamescom 2025 at Nvidia, and I’ve gained further insights. My takeaway: The visuals ultimately play a secondary role here, and the game itself possesses substantial potential for enjoyment.
Black State in action: Witness what unfolds when a player, primarily accustomed to League of Legends and indie titles, takes on a fast-paced shooter in my Black State gameplay video here (and yes, I missed the robots):
The visuals are commendable, but ultimately, they (virtually) don’t hold much significance.
Given that the Turkish studio Motion Blur, behind Black State, is relatively unknown, there were questions following its announcement about a year ago: Can a game that appears this impressive truly be developed by an anonymous studio?
Although certainty is elusive, I now feel quite assured in this instance: Yes, Motion Blur is capable. On one hand, this confidence stems from the increasing volume of new content. On the other, it arises from my personal experiences with the game at gc 2024 and 2025.
What I also realized after playing yesterday is that I swiftly overlooked the visuals while engaged in gameplay because the experience was so enjoyable.
Fast and inventive
Black State feels incredibly quick and fluid. Simultaneously, I have a wealth of gear and customization options at my disposal.
It remains to be seen how effectively one can progress through the game in stealth mode. However, there are methods available, such as quietly taking out multiple foes simultaneously and employing gadgets that cause the bodies of eliminated enemies to vanish to avoid drawing attention.
Overall, though, the weapons and gadgets presented in the gameplay demo lean more toward a “I’m Rambo and I’ll blast through the levels like Rambo!” strategy.
But even if a stealthy and slow approach isn’t ultimately significant, I’m confident that I’ll find immense enjoyment in Black State.
The perfect blend completes the experience
Black State showcases a broad array of weaponry, from traditional assault rifles to firearms that unleash sticky explosive rounds and instant-kill lasers. There are also gadgets like damage and stun drones that advance toward foes, complemented by a bullet time feature.
During my short session, I found it somewhat frustrating to have to frequently switch to a separate selection menu. However, this could possibly (and ideally) be streamlined through customizable controls.
Ultimately, the key element will be how effectively such a seamless gameplay loop can be established. Additionally, it remains to be seen whether, alongside the stylish visuals, the narrative and the portal mechanics involving doors that repeatedly transport me to different areas will function smoothly.
