Dawn of War: Definitive Edition – Creators Unveil Six Major Enhancements in the Strategy Classic Remaster

One of the most iconic 40K titles is making a comeback. We have received updated information regarding the enhancements in the Definitive Edition straight from the developer Relic.

Upgraded graphics, refined controls, enhanced AI – the remaster of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War guarantees significant updates in the Definitive Edition.

Following the trailer announcement, we posed several questions to the team at Relic Entertainment about additional features of the new edition, and we now have their responses.

## 7 Updates on the Definitive Edition

Here we outline the new information about the enhancements that Philippe Boulle, Head of Design at Relic Entertainment, has shared with us:

– There will be **21:9 support** for both the game’s visuals and the interface. You can choose to keep the interface elements centered or shift them to the edges of the display. For resolutions wider than 21:9, black borders may still be visible.
– The **view distance on maps** will be notably augmented, but not beyond what has already been shown in the trailer. Nonetheless, modders can bypass this limit for their own maps.
– The **shadow resolution** will optionally be enhanced compared to the announcement trailer. This is particularly beneficial during in-game cutscenes, where close-up shadows appeared pixelated. Overall, however, the Definitive Edition implements significantly advanced lighting technology, now presenting detailed character shadows for smaller units, which originally had only rough blob shadows.
– While there will be no free key binding options within the game, you can personalize key bindings via file entries, similar to the original. If it functions the same way as before, it might be somewhat tricky. However, three presets will be available: Classic, mirroring the original setup; Grid, where keys are arranged according to their positions in the interface; and Modern, aligning hotkeys as closely as possible across all factions.
– The developers assure one of the most vital gameplay enhancements in the **pathfinding**. The AI is expected to manage bottlenecks much more effectively now. Specifically, units from the same faction should no longer hinder each other’s movement as much. Additionally, squads should now better follow their teammates, which could simplify managing larger armies.
– The camera can now zoom out more extensively. You also have the option to set it to the old distance and then adjust the zoom manually.

We were already aware that all official content, including every DLC, will be incorporated. There’s also support for mods and a 30 percent discount for owners of the Anniversary Edition.

The remaster is normally priced at €30 and can be downloaded from [Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/3556750/Warhammer_40000_Dawn_of_War__Definitive_Edition/) and [GOG](https://www.gog.com/en/game/warhammer_40000_dawn_of_war_definitive_edition).

In contrast to the recent **25th Anniversary Remaster of System Shock 2**, the German language version is included in its entirety here, along with voiceovers.

## Insights on the development process

The development of the Definitive Edition took about a year, with a team of approximately 15 people at various times. However, long before this, the team had already verified whether the older developer versions of the game were functional so that any enhancements could be included.

Regrettably, we haven’t had the chance to play the new Definitive Edition of Dawn of War yet. Nonetheless, we hope to provide you with impressions from a test version upon its release.

Relic has not disclosed future plans following the remaster. There have been no announcements regarding new editions of Dawn of War 2 or the Company of Heroes series.

Similarly, new DLCs for Dawn of War 1, akin to those for the remasters of Age of Empires, are not officially in the pipeline as of now.
