The latest generation of Threadripper from AMD is poised to set new performance milestones. Will it excel in initial evaluations?
AMD concluded July on a high note: The brand new Ryzen Threadripper 9995WX broke multiple benchmark records.
Alongside the formidable new processor, “Team Red” also introduced other workstation CPUs built on Zen 5, which are comparatively more affordable.
Ryzen Threadripper surpasses itself
We’re focusing on the Threadripper 9980X (MSRP: $5,000) and Threadripper 9970X (MSRP: $2,500). Essentially, the processors vary only in their core configurations, consisting of 64 and 32 Zen 5 cores, respectively.
- Nevertheless, AMD is trimming some features from the specifications: Instead of 128, there are now merely 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes available. Additionally, support is being scaled back from octa-channel to quad-channel at rates up to 6,400 MT/s.
- In other aspects, the new Threadripper series achieves clock speeds of up to 5.4 GHz. The estimated power consumption for both processors stands at 350 watts.
The remaining question is: How do the Ryzen Threadripper 9980X and 9970X stack up against each other?
PC Games Hardware
AMD has managed to lower power usage while boosting computational capability. The transition to Zen 5 is particularly beneficial in the high-end category, even if it offers less advantage for desktop models. For those requiring peak computational power and ample I/O options, the TRX50 and new Threadrippers present a formidable solution.
