If you’ve been a long-time admirer of Dungeons & Dragons, you’ll be thrilled to know that several classics are set to be re-released shortly.
There’s considerable chatter currently surrounding the ongoing accessibility of video games due to Stop Killing Games. This issue impacts not only multiplayer titles; numerous older offline games are also facing increasing challenges to run.
This situation also impacts three D&D classics that are over two decades old. Thankfully, publisher SNEG is actively working on re-releasing many of these games on Steam. Furthermore, the games are being updated to ensure they look appealing on modern displays and (should) not encounter any technical issues.
Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard
Dragonshard is a real-time strategy game released in 2005 by Liquid Entertainment, the same team that previously gave us Battle Realms, a genuine RTS classic. However, Dragonshard presents a somewhat unique strategy experience. Even more than Warcraft 3, it draws extensively from role-playing games.
As you engage in traditional battles on the surface, you also partake in typical role-playing encounters with heroes underground. Dragonshard takes place in the D&D world of Eberron. It’s a rather grim realm where magical technology flourishes. The new version on Steam is scheduled for release in August.
The Temple of Elemental Evil
The Temple of Elemental Evil is inspired by one of the most revered classics in D&D adventures. The original was actually launched in 1985 and helped establish the concept of megadungeons. This classic tale was adapted into the then-current 3.5 edition of Dungeons & Dragons in 2003 by the development team at Troika Games (who later created Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines) and remained very true to the original source. The outcome is an authentic D&D experience featuring a vast dungeon, numerous choices, complex turn-based combat, and a genuine old-school atmosphere.
Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone
Demon Stone leans more toward action. This action role-playing game permits you to directly control three heroes from a traditional role-playing ensemble who have unleashed a significant danger upon the world and now must rectify their error.
Throughout the cinematic narrative, you can alternate between the three characters at any time, battling throngs of foes as a warrior, wizard, or rogue. The game unfolds in Faerûn, placing it within the same universe as Baldur’s Gate. The updated version will launch on Steam in August. If you visit the Steam page of publisher SNEG, you will find a plethora of classic titles, including numerous Dungeons & Dragons games. Beyond the three mentioned, there are also several really vintage games available, such as the strategy title D&D – Stronghold: Kingdom Simulator or the D&D Classics Collection featuring a wealth of classics.
