Need for Speed Underground dazzles in a fresh light due to an astonishing RTX remix mod.

While Need for Speed Unbound was not a bad title by itself, EA’s well-known arcade racing franchise is apparently once again nearing extinction. Thanks to an “RTX Remix” mod, a classic from over 20 years ago now appears better than ever.

NfS Underground RTX Remix looks quite impressive

Need for Speed Underground, which debuted in 2003, marked a significant milestone for the franchise and is still deemed one of the finest editions. Street racing and tuning were extremely favored themes during that period, and Underground provided the ideal setting for them.

When Need for Speed enthusiasts feel let down by the series’ direction, there is often a demand for a remake of Underground or one of its two even more beloved sequels.

Although an individual developer has been developing an Unreal Engine 5 remake of NfS Underground 2 for a while, modder alessandro893 is tinkering with a “RTX Remix” mod for the original Underground. And it’s genuinely remarkable:

The RTX Remix Toolkit was designed specifically for such initiatives. Modders can relatively effortlessly create remakes of classics utilizing modern technologies like ray tracing or Nvidia DLSS 4 with the Transformer AI model.

For his mod, alessandro893 has already incorporated over 1000 new light sources into the game world to enhance the lighting. He has also developed or revamped more than 500 new textures, 30 high-resolution 3D models, and 26 original meshes.

The China Town setting has also undergone a complete redesign to showcase the capabilities of the new technology more strikingly.

The mod remains in beta, but it already looks quite impressive and can be accessed for free via ModDB. The minimum specifications require an Nvidia Geforce RTX 3000, a Radeon RX 6000, and 6 GB VRAM. Let’s hope the modder manages to find enough time and enthusiasm to finish the project.
