New Ghost Recon Poised to Thrill Longtime Fans with Update and Launch Forecast

Ubisoft is said to be developing a new addition to the Ghost Recon series, intending to return to the franchise’s foundational aspects with an emphasis on realism and tactical gameplay. As reported by Insider Gaming, the forthcoming game, codenamed Project Ovr, is situated during a fictional “Naiman War” in Southeast Asia and will highlight military simulation features. This represents a departure from recent entries like Wildlands and Breakpoint, which shifted towards open-world gameplay.

The new Ghost Recon is anticipated to bring back the first-person viewpoint from the original titles, making it more comparable to games such as Modern Warfare, Squad, and Ready or Not. It is expected that the game will include dark and contentious scenes, further enriching its tactical and immersive experience.

The Ghost Recon series has encountered a brand dilemma, with fans yearning for the genuine, hardcore tactical gameplay reminiscent of the early 2000s. Ubisoft’s earlier effort to innovate with Ghost Recon Frontline, a free-to-play PvP-centric sequel, was scrapped in 2022 following unfavorable feedback.

Project Ovr is projected to achieve alpha status by fall 2025, with a possible launch in fall 2026. However, Ubisoft has yet to reveal when the game will be officially announced, and the company has opted not to conduct a Forward Showcase in 2025, likely due to setbacks in other major projects. In the meantime, rumors indicate that a Splinter Cell remake is also in the works, suggesting a wider revival of Tom Clancy’s classic titles.
