The New James Bond from Hitman Developers Matches closely with the Original 007 Concept.

In the latest stealth action game from IO Interactive, 007 appears quite different from any of the iconic movie Bonds, resembling more closely the original.

Who qualifies as the ultimate Bond? This discussion is timeless. Some people exclusively envision Daniel Craig as 007, while others hold Sean Connery as the definitive Bond – and a notable segment also appreciates Pierce Brosnan in the part. The fresh James Bond in 007 First Light shares only a minor similarity to any of them.

The development team at IO Interactive opted for a younger Bond for their narrative and crafted his character entirely based on their personal vision. This new Bond can already be spotted in the announcement trailer. However, what seems to be a creative interpretation actually aligns more with the original than the preceding Bonds – it appears to draw inspiration from Ian Fleming’s literary depiction.

A James Bond directly from the novels

One particularly notable aspect of the new James Bond is the prominent scar on his right cheek. No Bond has sported this on screen before, despite it always being a part of 007’s image. In the literary works, James Bond is depicted as follows:

  • Lean physique
  • Short, dark hair
  • Blue-gray irises
  • A cruel mouth
  • In his mid-30s
  • 1.83 meters tall
  • A narrow, vertical scar on the right cheek

His build, eye color, and scar align closely with the book’s description. The fact that he appears younger than his mid-30s is logical, given that we observe Bond entering MI6 in First Light. Whether the new Bond’s mouth can be considered “cruel” is open to interpretation.

Primarily, his hair, which leans more towards brown than black, deviates from Fleming’s envisioned appearance for Bond. A drawing by Fleming illustrates how closely IO’s Bond adheres to his concept:

Fleming also once likened Bond’s looks to the actor Hoagy Carmichael, who, with a bit of creativity, can also be seen in the new Bond’s visage.

Who is playing Bond anyway?

Interestingly, IO Interactive continues to keep under wraps the identity of the actor voicing James Bond in their game and who may have been involved in the motion capturing. This is a tactical choice, as they want to avoid shifting focus away from the game itself.

Nonetheless, fans are quite convinced that IO’s Agent 007 is portrayed by Irish actor Patrick Gibson. The 30-year-old is most recognized for his role as Dexter in the prequel series Original Sin.

Ultimately, however, the appearance of Bond is likely of secondary importance. For many, it’s undoubtedly of greater significance whether the new title from the creators of Hitman is enjoyable to play and if the narrative holds up.
