The Nintendo Switch 2 has been in retail for approximately a week now. Gamers worldwide are currently exploring the performance of the new model and which existing hardware remains functional.
Nintendo has officially stated that older Switch controllers are compatible with games exclusive to the Switch 2 – however, they cannot be connected directly.
On Reddit, user “iOvercompensate” has uncovered an interesting feature that we did not mention in our list of compatible Switch accessories: you can mix and match first and second generation Joy-Cons in any configuration you prefer.
Configuration is performed through the standard controller menu on the Switch 2, where pairing the desired controllers is as simple as pressing the L and R buttons at the same time.
The practical application of this feature is somewhat limited, yet still interesting:
- With the launch of the new Joy-Cons, certain games became incompatible, like “1-2-Switch” and “Nintendo Labo.”
- These games depend on the infrared sensor found on the right Joy-Con, which is exclusive to the first generation of controllers. In contrast, the new Joy-Con 2 utilizes an optical sensor that allows the controller to function like a mouse.
- By altering your controller setup, you can keep playing the aforementioned games.
A comment on Reddit humorously referred to the ideal solution for “a small left hand and an average right hand” – it makes sense that the larger Switch 2 would lead to a slight increase in controller dimensions.
Which generation of Joy-Cons fits your hand better? Are you anticipating a specific third-party manufacturer for your Switch 2 accessories? Share your thoughts in the comments!
