It has already been a busy year for the Call of Duty League, which has now been running for almost six months and is rapidly approaching its end, and the Call of Duty League Championship. This weekend, Major V’s qualifiers kicked off, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the most exciting events in recent years. In the last few months, with the shift to Twitch being a massively successful one, viewership records have been broken – and this could end up being the most popular COD Champs in history.

But first, we need to wrap up Major V – the Toronto Ultra-hosted Major. During the last few days, every team in the CDL took to the stage to scrape together as many points as possible before the regular season wraps up. There were heartbreaking losses for some, and the continuation of dominating streaks for others – which is typical for Call of Duty esports.

However, news recently surfaced that Activision admitted that it is having trouble with the ‘headwinds’ presented by the CDL. Could this be one of the final seasons we see?

OpTic Texas on the Verge of a New Dynasty

If OpTic Texas could secure a chip – or better yet, a trophy – then it stands to reason that an all-new dynasty could be forming with the current roster. Since signing Ghosty, the squad – which is also made up of Shotzy, Huke, and Dashy – has been on a monumental journey of sorts. This season, the team set a new record for an undefeated streak in Hardpoint, and since turning white hot in March, the squad has lost just three out of its last sixteen matches.

Of course, two of those matches have been grand finals in the Call of Duty League Majors, and twice the team has walked away in second place.

It’s a case of ‘start as you mean to go on’ for OpTic Texas in the Major V qualifying stage, though. This weekend, Texas secured a 2 – 0 record, laying waste to both Las Vegas Legion (which was a tough fight), and Atlanta FaZe (which was an absolute steamroller of a victory). Now, OpTic Texas’ record against FaZe, the number one team in the League, sits at 5 – 0 for the season. There’s no doubt that OpTic Texas is the frontrunner for both Major V and the Call of Duty League Championship.

But What About Everyone Else?

Well, it continued to be a terrible time for the Los Angeles Guerrillas, a team that may cease to exist by the end of the season. At the moment, LAG sits on an eight-match losing streak, which ties them up with Minnesota ROKKR for the season’s record – but ROKKR broke that eight-match streak with back-to-back wins against Florida and LAG themselves.

It was also a fairly miserable weekend for the LA Thieves, a team that’s currently living out Toronto Ultra’s Major IV performance. Following a win at Major III, Ultra went into Major IV’s qualifiers and produced a record of just 1 – 4, crashing out of the Major itself in fifth place. Now, LA Thieves is sitting pretty on a victory at Major IV, but since coming into the fifth and final Major stage of the year, the LA Thieves have failed to maintain that momentum.

There’s still plenty of ground to cover, but it was a relatively mixed bag this weekend. For instance, Legion beat Major I champions, NYSL, after falling against Texas. A win and a loss were attributed to Boston Breach, keeping things fairly mid for the squad, and Seattle failed to close out a single map against Ultra.

It’s an exciting time, and at this point, every single match is essential.
