The Steam Machine, a gaming console created by Valve, has officially opened for randomized pre-orders. The starting price for this new device is £879 / $1049 / €1039 for the base model with 512GB of storage. For those wanting additional storage, the 2TB variant is priced at £1149 / $1349 / €1359. Furthermore, if you opt to add a Steam Controller, the cost rises to £1208 / $1428 / €1428.
These costs have faced some backlash for being somewhat elevated, especially considering that the Steam Machine is perceived as a lower-tier piece of hardware despite its specialized design. Valve attributes these prices to the current difficulties in the component market, particularly the ongoing problems with RAM availability and pricing, a scenario often dubbed “RAMnarök.”
Valve’s designer Lawrence Yang and engineer Yazan Aldehayyat have recognized these challenges, emphasizing the effect of the component pricing and availability crisis on the ultimate price of the Steam Machine. In spite of these obstacles, the Steam Machine strives to deliver a distinctive gaming experience, utilizing Valve’s SteamOS and providing an alternative to conventional gaming consoles.
