"They Possess the Finest Bullsh*t Detectors": The Effect of the EVE Online x Google DeepMind AI Collaboration on Gamers

The influence of generative AI on PC gaming has ignited considerable debate, with many labeling it as harmful. Gamers have shown disapproval towards generative AI content, and developers, along with certain publishers, are becoming increasingly wary of its appeal. The urgency to create necessary infrastructure has resulted in component shortages, greatly impacting the hardware market. In spite of these obstacles, EVE Online’s developers, Fenris Creations, previously known as CCP Games, are optimistic about the promise of AI in improving their game.

Recently, Fenris Creations unveiled a “research partnership” with Google DeepMind, whereby DeepMind will take a minority ownership in the company. This collaboration intends to train AI agents using a distinct, offline iteration of EVE Online. During the EVE FanFest conference, Fenris CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson and DeepMind co-founder Adrian Bolton addressed this partnership. Although the details of the collaboration remain vague, the announcement surprisingly did not elicit a negative response from the game’s outspoken player community.
