"It Was Mayhem": How The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2 Are Gaining Insights from CD Projekt's Documentation Errors

The excitement around the imminent launches of “The Witcher 4” and “Cyberpunk 2” is intense, with enthusiasts keenly awaiting the groundbreaking features pledged by CD Projekt. Both titles are poised to display remarkable Unreal Engine strengths and fascinating storyline advancements, including possible significant cast comebacks. Nevertheless, one of the most impactful improvements in their creation process is the focus on comprehensive documentation, which may appear less thrilling but is essential for the durability and excellence of these franchises.

CD Projekt has adopted a new production framework that requires developers to uphold thorough internal documentation throughout the game’s creation. This involves keeping narrative bibles, tool manuals, and concept drafts current from one milestone to the next. This careful method of documentation is anticipated to establish a solid groundwork for future Witcher and Cyberpunk titles, guaranteeing consistency and clarity throughout the series.

During the Digital Dragons conference in Kraków, technical writer team lead Jarosław Ruciński and senior technical writer Adrian Fulneczek underscored the experiences CD Projekt has gained over the last two decades. The company has encountered difficulties due to inadequate documentation practices, such as the departure of company lorekeepers and the cancellation of essential tools to save expenses. These challenges have obstructed the advancement of initiatives like Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC and the forthcoming Witcher remake by Fool’s Theory.

By emphasizing detailed documentation, CD Projekt seeks to prevent prior errors and enhance the development workflow for “The Witcher 4” and “Cyberpunk 2.” This tactical change not only improves the existing projects but also establishes a standard for forthcoming titles, ensuring that the immersive realms of Witcher and Cyberpunk continue to enthrall fans for many years ahead.
