The foundational RPG franchise Wizardry has, for over forty years since aiding in the establishment of the roleplaying video game genre, become embroiled in disputes among contemporary stakeholders. Atari revealed yesterday that they had acquired the rights to the initial five Wizardry titles, along with “their underlying IP,” and stated their intent to re-release these five on current platforms. However, this morning, Japanese publishers Drecom – who obtained Wizardry’s copyright and trademark rights in 2020 – tweeted that, contrary to specific reports regarding Atari’s acquisition, they would retain ownership and oversight of the intellectual property moving forward.
