Video games have long been a source of leisure, innovation, and cultural interchange. However, the community surrounding them often partakes in a curious practice: employing genre names as insults. This trend mirrors broader concerns of perception and acceptance within the gaming realm.

One of the most debated terms has been “JRPG,” shorthand for Japanese Role-Playing Game. While it rightly describes a category of RPGs originating from Japan, it has historically been used in a contemptuous manner, insinuating that these games were somehow inferior or niche compared to their Western equivalents. This viewpoint has evolved over the years, with many now valuing the distinct storytelling and mechanics that JRPGs provide.

Another term, “walking sim,” surfaced to portray games concentrated on exploration and narrative over traditional gameplay elements. Initially, it was used ironically or derogatorily, suggesting that these games lacked depth. Nevertheless, numerous walking simulators have subsequently been acknowledged for their emotional richness and groundbreaking storytelling, challenging the idea that they are substandard.

“Eurojank” is a newer term in this vocabulary, referencing ambitious yet flawed games created by European developers. These games frequently showcase unique concepts and vast worlds but may experience technical difficulties or lack refinement. Andrii Verpakhovskyi, a designer on the original Stalker titles, contends against geographically labeling such jank, arguing that it unjustly confines the perception of these games’ potential and creativity.

These terms, while occasionally employed negatively, underscore the diversity and intricacy of the gaming landscape.
