Epic Games, famous for developing Fortnite and the Unreal Engine, has revealed a major cutback in its workforce, impacting over 1,000 staff members. In a letter to the entire company, CEO Tim Sweeney linked the layoffs to a mix of “industry-wide challenges” and “challenges specific to Epic,” specifically mentioning a drop in Fortnite’s appeal as a contributing reason.
The firm is enacting over $500 million in cost-saving measures, realized through reduced contracting, marketing budgets, and the elimination of open roles. Sweeney indicated that these actions aim to position the company “in a more stable place.”
Even though he supports artificial intelligence, Sweeney emphasized that the job cuts are “not related to AI.” This action represents the wider struggles confronting the gaming sector as companies deal with changing market conditions and consumer preferences.
