For several months, it appeared that the project had been put on hold, but now Amazon has even revealed a confirmed start date for filming.
The upcoming Tomb Raider series experienced a rocky beginning. Amazon’s intentions for a revival were initially disclosed in January 2023. After that, there was a lengthy silence until the project finally received approval in May 2024.
Nevertheless, once again there was quiet – until now. Amazon MGM Studios has announced that production will commence soon and has officially revealed the actress who will portray the iconic character Lara Croft.

Back in May 2025, she showcased her fit physique at the pool, which stirred speculations. Now it’s confirmed: Sophie Turner is set to take on the role of the daring archaeologist!
The 29-year-old actress rose to prominence with her portrayal of Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones.
Sophie Turner is poised to star as Lara Croft in the forthcoming Tomb Raider series from Amazon MGM Studios.

But that’s not all: Filming for the new series is scheduled to start on January 9, 2026. Fans can likely anticipate a release in 2027.
Actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Time) is responsible for the screenplay and will act as showrunner. She is accompanied by Chad Hodge, who previously contributed to projects like The Darkest Minds, Wayward Pines, and Good Behaviour. Jonathan van Tulleken (Shōgun, Top Boy) will serve as executive producer and will direct select episodes. Waller-Bridge, a longtime follower of Lara Croft, expressed her enthusiasm (via Variety):
It’s rare to have the chance to film a series of this scale with a character you cherished as a child. Everyone involved is thrilled about Lara and equally quirky, courageous, and humorous as she is. Prepare your artifacts… Croft is on her way…
Sophie Turner is equally primed for her new adventures as the cinematic embodiment of the legendary video game character and pays tribute to her predecessors’ performances in her statement:
I am thrilled to portray Lara Croft. She is such an iconic figure that holds great significance for numerous fans – and I am committed to giving it my all.
It’s a significant challenge to follow in the footsteps of Angelina and Alicia with their remarkable performances, but with Phoebe leading the way, we (and Lara) are in excellent hands. I can’t wait for all of you to witness what we have crafted.
Specific information regarding the storyline of the live-action series and the rest of the cast has yet to be disclosed. However, as the project appears to be evolving, we can likely expect some updates in the forthcoming months.
