For more than eight years, countless individuals have engaged in the multiplayer shooter PUBG daily. The developers have now revealed that they will cease support for the previous generation of consoles.
Which game holds the record on Steam for the highest number of players online simultaneously? After reading the introduction, the answer should be obvious. It’s PUBG, previously known as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, recognized as one of the most successful shooters of all time.
Upon its launch in 2017, Steam saw over 3 million players on its servers at peak times, and even now, the player count remains in the mid six-figure bracket. However, PUBG is bidding farewell to some of its fans. Support for PS4 and Xbox One will be phased out this fall.
Modernization comes at a cost
The developers shared this announcement on their website along with their timeline. A new update will be rolled out on November 13, 2025, signaling the end of support for PS4 and Xbox One. From that date onwards, the shooter will exclusively be available on current-generation consoles, and it will no longer be purchasable or playable on PS4 and Xbox One.
The accounts and transactions of all impacted players will, of course, remain preserved. Players will need to log in on a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S to continue enjoying the game. Refunds for purchased items are not out of the question. According to the developers, these will be processed according to the policies of the respective platform.
The developers cite the essential modernization in accordance with the latest console generation as the motivation for the transition to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The new version promises to be more stable, enhance graphics, and provide more reliable frame rates. It should also facilitate the delivery of larger updates.
It remains uncertain how many players will be impacted by the cessation of support for PS4 and Xbox One, as, unlike Steam, there are no publicly accessible statistics. The majority of players are likely to be on PC.
Nonetheless, the percentage of players still engaging on last-generation consoles is considerable. According to official statistics from Sony, the PS4 had an equal number of monthly users as the PS5 in 2024. While the newer console currently surpasses in player numbers, it can be assumed that some individuals will keep playing PUBG on PS4 or Xbox One. They now have just under three months to secure a new console or relinquish the shooter.
