Helldivers 2 Intends to Become More Challenging, Yet Developers Encounter Obstacles

“Super Earth is summoning – and this time it’s serious.”

The conflict for the galaxy is far from concluded for the valiant forces of Helldivers 2. After its launch in early 2024, the co-op shooter has consistently provided new content, additional weapons, and vicious foes – and on August 26, 2025, Xbox enthusiasts will enter the battle for the first time. However, for some seasoned players, that isn’t sufficient. They seek more. Tougher. More merciless.

While the majority of newcomers are still unwinding on the medium difficulty settings, hardcore professionals have long since clawed their way to the summit of the ten levels. There, a barrage of gunfire from formidable bosses, perilous enemy types, and unending waves of assaults awaits them. Yet, this is precisely where the developers have encountered an unseen barrier – and must reassess their approach.

“More foes? Sounds promising – until the game begins to struggle.”

In theory, it’s straightforward: more foes result in more chaos and thus inherently increased difficulty. However, as Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani elucidates, there are technical constraints. Each additional enemy consumes performance – and eventually, the gameplay experience deteriorates more than any virtual combatant.

The challenge: even now, the most perilous creatures appear in clusters at the highest levels. An additional surge in raw numbers would not only disturb the equilibrium but also risk overheating the servers. The remedy must, therefore, be more inventive than merely “more of everything.”
