"Censorship of Adult Material" – Steam Players Confront Visa, Unsatisfied with Credit Card Behemoth's Reaction

Following claims of censorship, Steam users are now reaching out to Visa directly – yet Visa’s reply has not been particularly well received.

Steam is aptly named, as the gaming platform finds itself in disarray. After several adult games were prohibited just shy of two weeks ago, users are outraged. Now gamers are voicing their complaints to those in charge – and the response is disheartening.

## What occurred?

On July 17, tensions flared on Steam: countless games vanished from the store due to non-compliance with the guidelines set by certain credit card companies. Visa, Mastercard, and other payment service providers want nothing to do with games like Sex Adventures – Incest Family. Such titles were unavailable for purchase in Germany anyway, but now this also applies globally. The platform itch.io is also now enforcing strict measures. You can learn more about why this is happening in our separate news article on the topic:

## A grievance to Visa

The Reddit user dudeduck has reached out to his bank with a pointed message: “As a long-time Visa customer, I view this as a significant invasion of customers’ control over their spending choices, even if these are entirely legal transactions/purchases,” stated dudeduck. He intends to switch to another provider as long as these censorship policies remain in place.

Visa has addressed the grievance, but the frustrated crowd has not taken it well.

“We explicitly forbid illegal activities on our network, but we are equally committed to safeguarding legal commerce. If a transaction is lawful, it is our policy to process that transaction. We do not make moral assessments regarding legal purchases made by consumers.”

In the opinion of user Drackar 39, this is “a genuine, bona fide falsehood.” LonelyKuma labels the reply as “a load of corporate nonsense.”

So far, tempers appear to be far from cooling. Nevertheless, it seems equally unlikely that the credit card companies will relent. In any case, it’s almost certain that this matter isn’t resolved yet. We’ll keep you informed of any new updates. For now, you can explore the article above to discover which new titles are being added to Steam this week!
