Top D&D Streamers Develop Their Own Game with Perfect Design

Critical Role, a sensation that started as a straightforward Dungeons & Dragons broadcast featuring voice actors, has transformed into a complex entertainment giant. With live performances, a thriving animated series on Amazon, and a wide array of merchandise, the creative group behind Critical Role is now exploring the world of video games. The team has shown a strong desire to create a game, capitalizing on the video game recognition of cast members like Matt Mercer and Ashley Johnson.

In a recent conversation with Variety, CEO Travis Willingham revealed that Critical Role has teamed up with AdHoc Studio to develop their inaugural video game. AdHoc, an independent studio situated in Los Angeles, comprises former developers from Telltale and Ubisoft. Their current undertaking, Dispatch, is a narrative adventure that merges superhero motifs with office humor, set to launch in 2025. The game’s eye-catching cartoon aesthetics and remarkable animations have won the admiration of Willingham and several Critical Role cast members, including Matt Mercer, Laura Bailey, and Travis Willingham, who are already lending their voices to characters.

Following the completion of Dispatch, AdHoc will shift its attention to crafting a game based in the universe of Critical Role. Although it may appear natural for a role-playing group to design an RPG, the initial offering will instead be a narrative-driven adventure featuring choices, akin to Dispatch. It will incorporate well-known characters from various Critical Role campaigns, inspired by their Amazon series. The team intends to present a refined game without exceeding their limits.

Alongside their gaming projects, Critical Role’s second animated series, Mighty Nein, is set to debut on Amazon Prime later this year, with the first trailer anticipated at San Diego Comic-Con.
