$80 for The Outer Worlds 2? For numerous gamers, this cost was excessive. Now Microsoft is retreating and promising lower prices for games.
Out of all titles, The Outer Worlds 2, a game featuring satirical commentary on capitalism, was set to be Xbox’s inaugural €80 game. For many players, it represented bitter irony that this role-playing game would usher in a new pricing era. Now that the initial excitement regarding the price hike has subsided, Microsoft has opted to overturn its decision.
On July 23, 2025, the official X account for The Outer Worlds humorously declared that the sequel to the space role-playing game will now only be priced at 70 dollars or euros:

Indeed, Microsoft has far more riding on this than merely Outer Worlds 2. In a statement to the website Windows Central, an Xbox representative stated: “Our full-price games, including The Outer Worlds 2, will continue to be priced at no more than €70.” This aligns with the existing market conditions.
Naturally, it remains to be seen how long this announcement will actually be in effect. Nevertheless, it appears Microsoft has chosen not to elevate prices for now. The publisher may be wary that otherwise, sales could plummet too sharply. However, the mention of market conditions also hints at a potential future attempt. At least for The Outer Worlds 2, the price is unlikely to fluctuate again. The sci-fi role-playing game is set to launch on October 29, 2025, and aims to enhance its predecessor in several aspects. Among other improvements, there will be increased role-playing choices, and players can freely decide which faction to align with. A darker narrative also awaits.
