From an anticipated project to a catastrophe: The reason behind the abysmal ratings for the latest game by the ex-GTA creator, now officially marked as the worst game of 2025.
You might have inferred it from our assessment, but it’s now confirmed: Mindseye has claimed the unfortunate distinction of the lowest-rated game of 2025. What began as an ambitious high-profile endeavor from a former GTA creator has turned into a textbook case of mismanagement.
Critiques flooding in from every direction
Mindseye, created by Build a Rocket Boy under Leslie Benzies’ guidance, was intended to redefine cinematic action-adventures. Hopes were elevated, considering Benzies’ reputation for iconic open-world games.
However, the launch on June 10, 2025, was anything but seamless— and the community’s initial feedback surfaced quickly. Shortly after its debut, Mindseye faced a dismal user rating on Steam — and now the critical reviews are arriving, after the publisher opted not to distribute review copies to media outlets.
With a Metascore of 43, Mindseye currently holds the title of the lowest-rated game of the year, trailing behind titles like Ambulance Life: A Paramedic Simulator, which managed to achieve a score of 44.
The most poorly received video games of 2025 (according to Metacritic)
- Mindseye (43 Metascore)
- Ambulance Life: A Paramedic Simulator (44 Metascore)
- Captain Blood (50 Metascore)
- Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour (53 Metascore)
- Neptunia Riders VS Dogoos (54 Metascore)
Critics’ reviews
GamesRadar+ (40/100)
Featuring a lackluster story and uninspired gameplay that squanders the promise of its Big Tech and AI science fiction backdrop, MindsEye stands as a deeply disappointing action-adventure title that fails to evoke nostalgia or lay a solid groundwork for future opportunities.
GameReactor UK (40/100):
If there was ever something I thought I wouldn’t express about Leslie Benzies’ inaugural self-developed title, it was that it would come off as uninspired and clichéd. I had hoped to find originality and flair here, even if it appeared incomplete before launch.
That’s not the reality, and it’s evident that MindsEye not only launched approximately six months prematurely, but it also resembles a decade-old GTA clone whose aspects are predominantly unrefined.
IGN (40/100):
If the performance remains steady and you’re shooting through robotic foes, MindsEye can serve as a satisfactory action shooter for a brief spell. The near-future context and driving mechanics are equally commendable. Nonetheless, the flashy visuals and cutscenes can’t mask the game’s clear deficiency in substance.
MindsEye is packed with ambitions but lacks original concepts, and its rigid mission framework renders the open world largely meaningless — frequently undermined by tedious combat, frustrating AI adversaries, poor frame rates, and glitches.
Add in the painfully unfinished free-roam aspect, and it’s obvious that the game was not prepared for launch. If you were eyeing MindsEye, it might be wise to rethink.
Mindseye will be remembered as a cautionary story, showcasing that well-known names and hefty budgets do not ensure quality. It remains unclear if Build a Rocket Boy can redeem themselves with updates and transform it into No Man’s Sky 2.0. For now, the recommendation is to steer clear until significant changes are made — or unless you have an inclination for disaster tourism.
