Cyberpunk 2 is gaining momentum. CD Projekt Red has initiated pre-production on the much-anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. However, we will have to wait some time before we revisit Night City.
The vibrant lights of Night City are shining once more: CD Projekt has plenty of updates regarding Cyberpunk 2.
The most significant detail is the official title: the follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077 is now officially named Cyberpunk 2. The previous working title, Orion, has been discarded.
Nevertheless, the Polish company also addressed the development status and a potential release timeline for Cyberpunk 2 during the announcement of its recent financial results.
### The present state of Cyberpunk 2
Piotr Nielubowicz, CD Projekt’s CFO, highlighted the ongoing success of the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. It has “achieved another sales milestone and has been bought by ten million players. This is an exceptional outcome considering that it has been just 20 months since its launch, and it affirms the gaming community’s ongoing fascination with the Cyberpunk universe.”
“In light of these advancements, I am even more delighted to share another significant milestone in our development of the next major title in this series: a few weeks ago, Cyberpunk 2 – formerly known as Project Orion – finished its concept phase and started pre-production. Kudos to the entire team!”
Cyberpunk 2 is no longer under wraps. It was initially disclosed in 2023 that CD Projekt’s Boston division was developing the role-playing game sequel.
During pre-production, the foundations of a game are established: What should be its size, what key features will it include, and what will the design entail?
All these elements must be decided beforehand to ensure that graphic artists, level designers, and programmers are aligned when production kicks off.
## Ambitious plans ahead
While CD Projekt Red’s primary emphasis remains on The Witcher 4, which was already in full development at the close of 2024, Cyberpunk 2 is set to receive a significant boost next year. Michał Nowakowski, co-CEO of CD Projekt, stated in an investor call that the Cyberpunk 2 development team will be the “primary recruitment focus” for 2025. This indicates that the team will be expanded in the coming months to speed up development.
## Cyberpunk 2: What is a feasible release timeline?
Whatever the implications of this news, the launch of Cyberpunk 2 is still quite some time away. When questioned about a potential release date, speculated to be late 2030 or early 2031, Nowakowski did not refute it. He stated plainly: “I can reiterate what I mentioned in one of our previous discussions, which is that our transition from pre-production to final release typically spans four to five years.”
However, Nowakowski added that each project has its unique traits and that numerous factors affect the final outcome. “Therefore, I won’t provide specific years, but yes, that’s the general overview,” he concluded to investors.
So we must be patient until we can once again engage in the street conflicts of Night City. Beyond the title, specific information about Cyberpunk 2 remains limited. However, Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the pen-and-paper resource involved in the development, recently revealed a surprising detail.
According to this, Cyberpunk 2 will no longer be confined to Night City but will also include a second city. This could potentially be Chicago.
