Nintendo Switch 2: A New Era in Gaming Control
In a thrilling update for gaming fans, Nintendo has announced that the forthcoming Switch 2 will allow gameplay with a standard USB mouse alongside the Joy-Con controllers. This capability, initially hinted at in a teaser earlier this year, has now been showcased in a video from Koei Tecmo featuring their title, Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening Complete Edition.
In the footage, producer Michi Ryu illustrates the smooth integration of a USB mouse with the Switch 2. He pauses the gameplay, attaches a mouse to the console, and a notification confirms the connection. Ryu then continues playing using both the mouse and the left Joy-Con, seamlessly alternating between the two control schemes.
Our editor Linh validated this feature in a hands-on review, where he played Metroid Prime 4: Beyond utilizing both the controller and the Joy-Cons’ mouse capability. This versatility in control methods could transform long gaming sessions, assuming that more titles implement this feature.
Even the Original Switch Supports Mouse
Interestingly, the original Nintendo Switch also permits mouse and keyboard connections, although this functionality is restricted to a handful of games such as Doom, Factorio, and Quake. The prospects for enhanced mouse support in the Switch 2 are promising, as it could improve the gaming experience for a wider array of titles.
Additional Mouse Support for the Switch 2?
While mouse and keyboard support on the original Switch was somewhat of a novelty, the Switch 2 is anticipated to fully embrace this feature. A video released by Nintendo highlights a user interacting with the console’s interface via a mouse, indicating a more integrated approach to mouse support in the upcoming system.
However, it still remains unclear if a standard mouse will work universally with the Joy-Con controllers. The Switch 2 is expected to release on June 5, 2025, with a price of €470, or €510 in a package with Mario Kart World. As the launch date draws nearer, gamers are keenly awaiting more information on the console’s features.
