What kind of game is this?  Capes is a strategy game with turn-based battles that follows in the footsteps of genre greats such as the XCOM series or Marvel’s Midnight Suns. The game is being developed by the Australian studio Spitfire Interactive, whose author Morgan Jaffit is the creative mind behind cult classics such as Freedom Force (2002) and Teen Titans (2006). Capes is published by Hamburg-based publisher Daedalic Entertainment.

In Capes, you play as a team of aspiring superheroes who want to reclaim King City, a city that has been ruled by a dystopian supervillain regime for over 20 years. To do so, you recruit unique heroes with their own background stories, develop their superpowers and accompany them in over 50 main and side missions until the brilliant finale.

Capes will be released on PC on May 29, 2024. Pre-order is already possible on consoles.

What makes Capes different: Most superhero stories begin with the heroes discovering themselves and their powers and mastering their abilities just in time, when the villains’ evil master plan is about to become reality. The villains’ machinations are thwarted just in time and the day is saved.

This in turn became a dystopian nightmare in which the villains oppress the population with violence, terror and despotism. Superheroes are also strictly forbidden and anyone suspected of developing special powers is rounded up by the authorities and simply disappears.

But your heroes get away and discover their special abilities. Now you have to quickly find allied superheroes and build up a meaningful resistance against the rogue regime. In the end, the noble goal is to recapture the city from the villains and restore justice and peace.

How Capes plays: Everyone starts small, including your young superheroes, whose immature powers harbor great potential. Over the course of more than 50 patrol and story missions, they gain experience and become stronger and stronger. On top of this, you will meet other superheroes who you can add to your team. The heroes include the defensive Facet with his crystal shields, the teleporting Rebound and the pyromaniac Ignis.

Only four heroes appear in the missions at any one time, which you put together individually beforehand. Each hero plays differently and requires a new way of using their powers and abilities. It becomes particularly tactical when you want to find the perfect combination of heroes, as the young spandex suit wearers not only support each other, but can also unleash devastating team-up attacks in which they combine their respective powers

Not only are the respective heroes unique, the composition of the team also needs to be carefully considered.

Don’t worry about the familiar problems of the turn-based tactics genre: in Capes, battles are not about hit probabilities or taking cover with pinpoint accuracy. Instead, you have to be constantly on the move and cleverly combine your powers.

Because superpowers don’t make you invulnerable, quite the opposite. If you just stand around stupidly or throw yourself death-defyingly into the fray, you won’t get far here. Great power definitely means great responsibility here!
