What the isometric squad tactics game Aliens: Dark Descent shows in its gameplay reveal should excite many players. On top of that, the trailer reveals the release date.

Fancy a xenomorph hunt? If so, then with Aliens: Dark Descent an extremely exciting tactical action title could be waiting in the wings this summer.

The latest trailer finally shows gameplay from the isometric real-time tactics game and reveals the release date: From 20 June your squad, consisting of several soldiers, is supposed to get into the Dropship.

Aliens: Dark Descent will be released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

You can watch the new trailer, consisting of plenty of gameplay footage, here:

What is Aliens: Dark Descent anyway?

Gameplay: According to the developers, Aliens: Dark Descent is a real-time squad-based tactical action game. You look isometrically at the action and control your squad of several through different locations.

However, you do not give orders to each individual soldier, but control your squad as a whole. Each command is translated by the game and transmitted to the optimal soldier. Your squad is equipped with weapons and plenty of technology from your arsenal to deal with consoles, locked doors and all kinds of creatures. So you tell what to do, where to do it. The game decides who and with what.

You are supposed to concentrate on the atmosphere and exploring the abandoned bases. In addition, the game can be slowed down at any time. This way you can take your time to think about your next steps. But we know even more about what you can expect in the dark strategy game:

  • Enemies: Facehuggers, Praetorians, Alien Queens and many others. Human lone wolves and a yet unknown brand new threat are also promised.
  • Classes: Five basic classes, with dozens of specialisations, abilities and weapons.
  • Story: Aliens: Dark Descent lets you experience the adventures of a marine unit whose ship has crashed on the planet Lethe. As if that wasn”t enough, unfortunately a formidable xenomorph outbreak is going on right now. So it”s clear what your men and women are doing: loading and unloading.
(Gritty, Aliens: Dark Descent can definitely do that.)

Levels, equipment and permadeath

When assembling your squad before the missions, Aliens: Dark Descent brings back memories of Firaxis” Xcom series. You level up your soldiers, give them new abilities and perks, but are also responsible for the equipment. In this way, you assemble your desired squad of marines and then send them to their deaths … I mean on the mission. But yes: If a soldier dies, he”s dead.

(Not only Pulse Rifles, you can also put flamethrowers into your people''s hands. They can visibly use them.)

To make the experience even more painful, of course, they let you customise your fighters.

Who is behind the game? The publisher for Aliens: Dark Descent is THQ Nordic. The title is being developed by Tindalos Interactive. The studio is responsible for games like Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 1 and 2. So these are in no way newcomers who are taking on a venerable brand with – at least in some features – a great role model.

In conclusion, it would be an exaggeration to call Aliens: Dark Descent an Aliens Xcom, but those who feel comfortable with the Firaxis title will certainly get their money”s worth here.

And what do you think? Are you looking forward to the game? Do you find the gameplay approach exciting or do you leave your M41A Pulse Rifle in the locker? Or are you maybe not fans of the franchise at all? Tell us about your (lack of) anticipation in the comments!
