**Paradox Interactive’s Updated Discord Guidelines on Historical Figures: A Reply to Backlash**
Paradox Interactive, the creators of the well-known strategy title “Hearts of Iron IV,” have recently introduced a revised guideline concerning Discord profile images. This alteration follows a controversy ignited by the removal of a user who displayed a photo of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of Turkey, as their profile image.
The updated regulation bans the use of Discord profile pictures that feature historical figures born after January 1, 1800, except for official portraits from the game. Nonetheless, there is a notable exception: members of the Discord community can still utilize any official in-game portraits from Hearts of Iron IV, including those of individuals from after 1800, but excluding significant leaders of Nazi Germany.
This policy modification was conveyed in a Discord message by game director Laszlo “Batya” Pieper, which was also disseminated on Reddit. In his message, Pieper admits to mishandling the matter, stating, “Paradox never strives to reinterpret history or take stances on political figures, and we clearly managed that responsibility inadequately.”
The choice to limit certain historical figures in profile images highlights the difficulties encountered by game developers when navigating the intricate intersection of history, politics, and community oversight. By permitting the use of only official in-game portraits, Paradox seeks to uphold a neutral position while addressing the worries expressed by the community.
