The Cleansing of Skate Mirrors the Diminishing of Counterculture and the Struggle to Remain Motivated


I recall discussing the Skate trailer with my former barber last year. We weren’t worried about the common complaints. We were merely excited to create new edits and dive back into the classic Skate flowstate on a fresh engine that would ideally offer more realistic physics. My barber happened to lead the Syracuse straight-edge hardcore band All 4 All. This was a punk rock barbershop, and naturally, we both had a passion for executing tricks in Skate 3 in the most sketchy manner possible.

To land sketchy means to land in a way that appears imperfect, looking as though one is not in control. The pro skaters in Baker, Zero, and Emerica videos, donning leather jackets and sporting kitchen tattoos, were celebrated for making sketchy landings look incredibly cool in the early 00s. Although I no longer reside in Syracuse, I can imagine my old barber (shout out Sam, hope you’re doing well) shares my disappointment that the new Skate fails to permit players to land in a sketchy style.
