The topic of skill-based matchmaking is not solely relevant for CoD enthusiasts. Battlefield isn’t disregarding it, but it has other priorities to focus on.
Battlefield 6 is set to officially launch on October 10, 2025, and players understandably want to know: What is the gameplay experience like? You can get insight either from our shooter expert Kevin, who has already had the opportunity to play, or by participating in the open beta.
But what about the aspect of who you’ll be competing against? Matchmaking will likely consider a player’s individual abilities, though other elements will be prioritized more significantly.
Is ping paramount this time?
As reported by the reputable news outlet X CharlieIntel, DICE has identified four elements that influence which match the system selects for you. These include the traditional factors:
- Ping
- Player location
- Server capacity
- Individual skill
This information was shared during the presentation at the reveal event. It was also indicated that the system prioritizes the individual factors differently based on the player count and game mode.
However, the implications for specific modes were not clarified. It is possible that modes with larger player counts put more focus on filling the lobby, as Conquest, for instance, relies on a full battlefield atmosphere.
In Team Deathmatch, ping and skill may hold greater importance, as the performance of individual players is critical in this mode.
The first two factors are aimed primarily at ensuring players have the best possible server connections. Skill appears to play a comparatively minor role.
DICE meets many, but not all, community expectations
Players should be pleased with the matchmaking framework, although it remains to be seen how the skill aspect will actually manifest in the gameplay. The conversation around this feature was already gaining momentum within the community in April, prompting the community manager to step in.
The SBMM topic gained significant attention due to its competitor, Call of Duty. The shooter frequently faces criticism regarding its matchmaking system. The same applies to the vibrant skins, which, according to the developers, will not be part of Battlefield 6.
Regarding server browsers, however, DICE has only offered a minor concession. Many players wish to select their match from a server list in Battlefield 6, as opposed to being allocated a game by the system. This feature will only be accessible in the new portal mode and not in the standard game. More details on this can be found above in the box.
