Sony and Tencent: Legal Dispute Regarding Horizon Imitation

Perilous Resemblance – How a Game Sparked a Legal Controversy

Within the realm of video games, concepts are frequently exchanged, further developed, or utilized as sources of inspiration – yet at times, the distinction between tribute and imitation can be hard to identify. It is this very distinction that Sony and Tencent are accused of violating. The focal point of the contention is “Light of Motiram,” an upcoming action title that, as per Sony, bears too much resemblance to the successful Horizon franchise, both visually and conceptually.

The game, under development by Tencent’s Polaris Quest studio, is already featured on Steam and has garnered substantial attention due to its artistic design and female lead character. According to Sony, this protagonist—a red-haired warrior equipped with a bow set in a futuristic environment—bears a striking resemblance to Aloy, the protagonist of Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. Fans online have promptly labeled it a “brazen imitation.” Sony, however, contends that the resemblances extend far beyond mere aesthetics: the gameplay mechanics, visual presentation, and promotional materials are reportedly too akin to the original series. Particularly contentious: Tencent is said to have actively pursued acquiring the rights to the Horizon IP, but Sony rebuffed the offer. Shortly thereafter, Light of Motiram emerged.

What might seem like an intriguing case to outsiders is morphing into a grave lawsuit. On July 25, Sony initiated legal proceedings in California, alleging copyright and trademark violations, alongside a request for a jury trial.

$150,000 per Game – Sony Aims to Halt the Project

In the litigation, Sony seeks damages of up to $150,000 for each infringing title in the Horizon series – in addition, it requests an immediate prohibition on distribution. The promotional materials for Light of Motiram are to be seized and destroyed. This demand arises as Sony accuses Tencent of intentionally fostering confusion. All in a bid to capitalize on the original series’ success.

According to legal documents, Tencent’s marketing presentation even led many players to believe that Light of Motiram was a new installment in the Horizon franchise. This misrepresentation is likely to be particularly concerning for Sony, especially given that the company is developing additional sequels. The legal escalation thus appears to be a contest for the future of the brand. The case is especially delicate, as Tencent is regarded as one of the most significant investors in the gaming industry. With interests in companies like Epic Games, Ubisoft, and even FromSoftware, a public legal dispute between such major players is poised to send a powerful message throughout the entire industry.

Whether Light of Motiram will ever see the light of day remains uncertain. The game is still available for pre-order on Steam, but no definitive release date has been provided. Sony, however, has made it clear that in matters concerning the core of one of its most prosperous franchises, it will show no leniency.
