My Memorable Encounter with a Trash Bin at Gamescom: Zero Regrets

# Danny Enjoyed a Quite Extraordinary Date at Gamescom 2024 – Featuring a Fresh Gaming Highlight

If anyone had suggested to me beforehand that my most entertaining gamescom date would involve flirtation with a trash bin and a candelabrum, I probably would have believed them. I openly admit that my affection occasionally lies with games that most people wouldn’t even glance at. However, I never envisioned becoming so thrilled over a conversation with my rubbish bin.

Despite enthusiastically sharing this event with everyone and their mother (and even those who weren’t interested) before gamescom, I didn’t anticipate feeling even more exhilarated post-event. There were merely a few minutes of gameplay and a developer conversation in between.

Have I piqued your interest enough so that you won’t promptly exit the virtual room when I bring up the game’s title? Great! Because I’m discussing **Date Everything**.

## Think Pokémon … Featuring Voices from Mass Effect and Final Fantasy

In *Date Everything*, the title truly encapsulates the concept. You find yourself in a house, don a pair of magical spectacles, and suddenly, you can chat with your trash bin, your chair, or even your toilet. Yes, you read that correctly. The game allows interactions with over 100 characters, and not all of them are non-living. Indeed, during an interview, the developer shared that you can even converse with your existential dread.

> “Many of us grapple with existential anxiety… So why not form a bond with it? Great news: In *Date Everything!*… you totally can! Despair and uncertainty – count me in!”
> – *Date Everything* (@DateEverything) July 31, 2024

Every character is voiced entirely in English – and at a top-notch level. Renowned *voice actors* such as Laura Bailey (of *Critical Role*, *Mass Effect*, and *Spider-Man* fame) and Ben Starr (from *Final Fantasy 16*) also lend their talents.

To assist players in navigating the multitude of characters, the game features a sort of Pokédex that records every interaction. Additionally, there are occasionally clearer and at times more ambiguous clues regarding the locations of items and conversational partners yet to be discovered.

## More Than Just a Treat for the Ears

Within the brief time I got to experience *Date Everything* at gamescom, I observed three additional compelling aspects alongside the remarkable voice acting:

– The character designs are exquisite and consistent.
– The humor is delightfully quirky.
– The dialogue is skillfully crafted.

Here’s a glimpse of the speaker and the appearance of my new favorite bin known as Trash Cam:

> “Another one! We’ll maintain our distance…”
> – *Date Everything* (@DateEverything) July 31, 2024

The dialogue is what I find most thrilling and intriguing about dating simulations. In *Date Everything*, too, the unique dialogues paired with the soundtrack are a standout feature. During my discussion with the developer, I learned that all characters possess their distinct narratives. Naturally, some stories and character developments are lengthier than others. Ultimately, I can forge friendships with any and all of them, flirt, or quarrel to the extent that we transform into adversaries. The game doesn’t shy away from exploring darker topics amid its humorous facade.

My pal Trash Cam is rumored to have a particularly intriguing and profound backstory, but the developer on-site wasn’t keen on revealing much. However, in my initial exchange with Cam, he appeared quite aloof. Is there an “Enemies to Lovers” arc lurking beneath the surface?

I have yet to explore how extensive the flirting options are. The USK label of “released from 16,” prominently displayed at the official booth on the exhibition grounds, gives me hope(?) that things might get steamy here or that the themes are more profound than the playful surface initially suggests.

Regardless, *Date Everything* conceals a plethora of thrilling elements beneath its whimsical exterior. Even if you end up viewing your home environment with … a fresh perspective afterward.
